Candles have been around for at least 2200 years in one form or another. In fact the candle is so necessary, that people all over the world developed their own versions independently. Of course during those early days, candles were homemade and were not considered suitable gifts. Instead, of being coveted and exciting gifts; candles were household necessities. Although most people have electricity these days; candles are still almost as popular as they were when they were the only light people had after dark.

It is barely possible that in developing countries some people could be filling out green card application or immigration forms by candlelight because electricity may be unreliable where they are. However once there are in the US, they will probably be filling out their green card renewal form by electric light and saving those candles for a romantic dinner.

When candles were necessary to living most people made their own by hand dipping them. Jar candles did not come into widespread use until glass became common and easy to make. Shopping for candles usually involved a visit to the local candle maker and the quality was fairly unpredictable.

Today though, shopping for candles to scent the bathroom, add a romantic or formal touch to the dining room table or just decorate a desk. The colors shapes and sizes created by candle artists today are simply amazing. One can still go to local shops which specialize in selling candles or even shop online and miss the hustle and bustle of the store not to mention the parking situation and the sometimes less than stellar selections in small stores.

Once you find the idea candle type it may well be that you choose to make a scented candle your main room freshener. Some of these candles are made from soy which is a clean burning sootless candle that holds perfumes and scents very well. With these candles, the scents are not only unique but strong enough to work well as gentle room freshener.

Unscented candles may make the best candle gifts for individuals with allergies. Soy candles produce no smudging of the candle glass or holder, and are long clean burning candles. Without added perfumes or scents to irritate the highly allergy sensitive person, they can be beautiful gifts that work for almost anyone.

In 1892 when Ellis Island was established as an immigration port people probably filled out their immigration forms or green card forms by the light of candles. We have come a long way, electricity is readily available and the new immigrant will probably be filling out their green card renewal forms after blowing out the scented candle room fresheners under the gentle glow of an electric lamp.
